Colossians

Open Doors | Colossians 4:2-6

“OPEN DOORS”

Pastor Trent zooms out to show the missionary identity of the Apostle Paul. The gospel globe trotter teaches: (1) every Christian is a missionary and (2) every church is called into Christ's mission. Praying for open doors for the gospel is not optional, but essential for every follower of Jesus. What moves the mission of God forward? It moves forward when the mission of God ceases to be a problem “out there” and becomes a passion “in here.”

COLOSSIANS

Paul’s Letter to the Colossians. This little letter offers the center of gravity for Christians and churches to grow toward maturity. It sparkles with line after line of good news, convincing saints and skeptics of the truth: Christ is all. The Lord Jesus is… sufficient and satisfying, worthy and working, faithful and fruitful to bring his church to “walk in a manner worthy of Him.”

"To Live Resurrected..." (Part 3) | Colossians 3:18-4:1

"TO LIVE RESURRECTED..." (Part 3)

How far does Easter reach? Surely, the gospel affects the mind. It affects the heart. We may even say that it affects the body. The answer of Colossians is that the gospel reaches to all your relationships. To live resurrected, Christ does not reach just to you -- but through you to others. With this context, Pastor Trent teaches through the Apostle Paul's words to the first century Christian Household about marriage, parenting, and slavery.

"To Live Resurrected..." (Part 2) | Colossians 3:12-17

"TO LIVE RESURRECTED..." (Part 2)

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is more than a historical event and more than doctrinal truth. Christians have been raised to live resurrected! In other words, the good news of Easter brings not just new content -- but a new culture. The "clothing of Christ" produces new, humane ways of relating to one another. As such, the Apostle Paul urges the church to put on (like clothing) the love, peace, word, and name of their Lord Jesus Christ.

Raised to Live Resurrected | Colossians 3:1-4

RAISED TO LIVE RESURRECTED

On Easter Sunday, Pastor Trent named two common objections to Christianity: believing the resurrection and the behavior of Christians. Colossians shows how the resurrection matters not merely for an after-life, but your present life. Because Jesus was raised to new life, you can walk in newness of life.

That's Not Growth | Colossians 2:16-23

“THAT’S NOT GROWTH”

In chapter two, Paul reminds this young church that “Christ is the fullness.” By faith, these Christians are united to Christ in life, death, resurrection, and glory. They have everything needed for GROWTH in godliness and into the likeness of Jesus. Now, Paul says of three things: “That’s not growth.”

Walk in Him | Colossians 2:6-7

“WALK IN HIM”

The summary of the whole letter: (1) Receive Christ and (2) Walk in Christ. Jesus has all the nutrients. He is the right environment. The Apostle Paul speaks of Christ like a physical place in which one can live and "walk about." Paul repeats what Jesus revealed: “Christ is the way, the truth, and the life.” Not merely the entrance, but the entirety of the Christian life.

WHAT DO YOU NEED?

Immanuel Fellowship has (finally) arrived in chapter 2! Here, the Apostle lays out what is needed to grow toward maturity. Put simply: we need more of Christ, to grow mature in Christ. Pastor Trent shows three ways we get "more" of Christ in Colossians 2:1-5.

A NEW KING (Part 2)

Is Jesus but one of many spiritual guides? The city of Colossae intersects with the culture of Minneapolis on this question. After describing the New Kingdom, the Apostle Paul turns his gaze at the New King. These verses are a "song of praise" that sing of the story, scope, and scandal of redemption.

A NEW KINGDOM

What does it actually mean to receive Christ? The Apostle Paul is laying the foundation for “receiving Christ“ before he teaches the church about “growing in Christ.” Pastor Trent unpacks these verses by teaching three keywords: delivered, transferred, and redeemed.

HOW THEN SHOULD WE LIVE?

How then should we live? The Apostle Paul lays down his cards in this an epic pastoral prayer. His heart for the Colossians and desire for all Christians is that they would "walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him." Pastor Trent teaches these verses by offering the destination, map, and guide that we need to please the Lord.

What good is the hope of heaven now? | Colossians 1:3-8

WHAT IS THE HOPE OF HEAVEN NOW?

How often do you think of heaven? It's pretty likely the average Christian is reluctant to answer that question! The church in Colossae, however, was a community was marked by the "hope laid up in heaven." Pastor Trent help us from Colossians 1:3-8 how being heavenly minded does a world of earthly good.

WHAT DOES GOD WANT?

"What does God want?" is one of the crucial questions life that Christians and non-Christians alike ask themselves. In the opening verses of Colossians, Paul hints that what God wants (or "wills") is for us to receive the mystery of Christ and run toward maturity in Christ. Pastor Trent offers a simple acronym (A-C-T) to move us into action this year.

Ripple Effect: Opening Doors

TheRippleEffect.jpeg

What opens the door to a gospel ripple effect? In this final message in the Ripple Effect series, Pastor Trent encourages us to pray. Through the cross, Jesus Christ grants us "access" to God in prayer! And yet, there is nothing that shows our inattention toward God like prayer. We need grace and guidance to learn how to "continue steadfastly in prayer" (Colossians 4:2).

Dominion: The Realm of King Jesus

KingdomCome-sermon-4.001.jpeg

With over 150 references to “the Kingdom” in the New Testament, the Kingdom of God is perhaps the most central teaching of the Lord Jesus. However, the Kingdom is also the one of the more confusing concepts in the Bible. Is the Kingdom here and present? Is it coming or future? In this four-week series, Pastor Trent gives an overview of the Kingdom of God and how critical it is for our mission as a church plant.
